  I love Dr. John’s music—my favorites of his being the classic Gris Gris and Gumbo albums. He can get kind of slick sometimes, but he’s always got a great song or two per album. This one sounds nice and raw and I’m looking forward to the rest.

  Dr. John - Ice Age

  Veteran Dr. John may have out Black Keys-ed the Black Keys with his new LP, Locked Down. Ironically or predictably, i’m not sure which but it’s possibly both, he’s done it with the help of half of the Black Keys, Dan Auerbach, who takes up the production reigns. The sound is chunky and funky but not so tightly constrained that the life slips out it. There’s a spirit of revolution running through the songs as well, not only through the rabble rousing lyrics but also the loosely assembled instrumentals which reject rigid convention and rather tend towards raucous rebellion.

  “When It Was Over”

  I played in the Two Dollar Pistols for 9 years. This is the lead off track from our last record, Here Tomorrow, Gone Today. We recorded it live in the studio, for the most part, and I think it captures the feel of our live show better than any other song we put to tape.

  We’ll be playing some reunion shows this weekend at the Garage in Winston Salem (5/20) and at the Saxapahaw Summer Music Festival Series (5/21). Come on out!

  It’s been a quiet afternoon in the office. I recorded this a while ago, but it fit my mood today. Kind of a Twin Peaks thing with the twangy low baritone guitar and the synth pad background.

  Tryptophan - Post Turkey Ambient Music

  I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. I returned home yesterday from visiting family and worked in the studio today on some “proper” songs with guitars and mics and stuff. To take a break from this, I put down this little ambient electronic ditty when I was about to shut down and get groceries and played around with some processing until I got it sounding like I wanted. I hope it doesn’t put you to sleep, as the title might suggest, but instead give you a relaxed respite. A spa for your mind, maybe? ;)
